Dutch kickboxing legend Andy Souwer explained his withdrawal from the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing Grand Prix in a video posted on the fighter’s Instagram account.
Souwer was a late scratch from Friday’s ONE fight card in Singapore. The promotion announced Souwer’s replacement last weekend, but didn’t explain why Souwer was removed from the event.
Souwer explained it was a medical issue that forced him out of the tournament.
“I got a lot of questions from all the audience, fans, and people. In short, I got a big problem with my eye,” Souwer said.
“I’m out of the tournament. I’m really disappointed to not participate. But you know what? The health is more important than the fight.”
“I fought all my life. It’s just an injury. I need to step out of it, and just think about my family and my health.”
“For that, that’s the answer to all the questions. I’m out because of an eye injury.”
Souwer is still getting medical treatment for the eye condition, and his competitive future at this point appears uncertain.
