Morosanu Returns to Glory on February 16
Catalin Morosanu will face Giannis “Hercules” Stoforidis of Greece at the Glory event in Chicago on February 16. Morosanu’s fight will be part of the Glory Superfight Series, which takes place before the main card and streams live on UFC Fight Pass.
Morosanu hasn’t fought since a split decision loss to Michal Turynski last August at Glory 44. He fought in Superkombat earlier last year, and was heavy in his decision victory over Lukasz Krupadziorow. The hard punching ex rugby player Morosanu, 33, is 2-4 in his last six fights. The fight with Stofordis is a rematch of an earlier encounter that took place in Superkombat in August 2014. Morosanu won the first fight by second round stoppage. Stoforidis is 0-1 in Glory, losing to Anderson “Braddock” Silva by stoppage last May at Glory 41 in Holland. The Greek comes into the Morosanu rematch off a unanimous decision win over Vladimir Tok at an Enfusion event in Germany.
No News on Daniel Ghita
Reports surfaced last year that Daniel Ghita was planning to return to the ring. But there is still no news of a confirmed fight date for the veteran contender. Ghita, nicknamed “The Savage Samurai”, was one of the most popular heavyweights in the sport before he disappeared from kickboxing after a loss to current Glory heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven in June 2014. It was his second loss to Verhoeven in Glory, and Gokhan Saki also defeated Ghita in a heavyweight title eliminator. He’s come up short in big fights against Rico, Saki, and legend Sem Schilt, but Ghita’s powerful kicks and punches give him a chance to beat any heavyweight on any given night. Let’s hope last year’s rumors come to fruition, and Ghita returns to the sport in 2018.
Superkombat Promises Big News
Superkombat, the Romanian kickboxing promotion headed by Eduard Irimia, had a quiet 2017. The promotion ran shows in Romania and Spain, and partnered with Chinese promotion Faith Fight for an event in China. There was talk during Superkombat’s broadcasts on the CBS Sports Network of the promotion holding events in the U.S. but nothing materialized. Last month, Superkombat promised big news for its fans, and perhaps a U.S. debut or other major news is around the corner.
