The ONE Kickboxing Featherweight World Grand Prix Final now has an official date. ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced the tournament final, which carries a prize of one million dollars to the winner, will be held on 13 October at the ONE: Century event in Tokyo.
The Featherweight Grand Prix began in May, and the last quarterfinal takes place on 12 July in Malaysia. Giorgio Petrosyan faces Petchmorrakot Petchyindee Academy in a rematch ordered by the One Championship Committee due to improper officiating in their first bout. Petchmorrakot defeated Petrosyan by decision in their first encounter, but the bout was changed to a no contest and a rematch ordered because “the referee did not adequately control illegal clinching” by the Thai, according to Sityodtong.
The winner of the Petrosyan-Petchmorrakot bout will face Jo Nattawut in the next round, while Dzhabar Askerov meets Samy Sana in the other semifinal. The semifinal dates are yet to be announced.
The October ONE: Century event will also feature three MMA title fights, and the finals of the organization’s MMA lightweight and flyweight tournaments. The organization is promoting a stacked card to celebrate its 100th show.
The Kickboxing Featherweight Grand Prix Final was the only kickboxing bout announced by Sityodtong today.
ONE Kickboxing Lightweight Champion Regian Eersel of the Netherlands is expected to defend his title at the event, and teammate Tarik Khbabez is likely to compete for the organization’s light heavyweight kickboxing belt. The fighters stated recently in television interviews they “think” they will be on the card.
