GLORY Kickboxing returned to Germany Saturday for Glory 69 in Dusseldorf.
In the evening’s main event, Marat Grigorian retained the Glory Lightweight Title with a five-round unanimous decision over Tyjani Beztati. Beztati was knocked down in the fourth round.
Mohamed Abdallah and Michael Smolik disappointed the home German audience in the co-feature. The two heavyweights spent a lot of time grabbing and holding, and by the second round the fans at the ISS Arena were booing the action. The referee told off both fighters. “This is a kickboxing fight, not a wrestling fight,” he warned. Both men received warnings for clinching but neither received a point deduction.
Abdallah’s game plan was to crash distance and crowd Smolik so he couldn’t throw his dangerous spinning techniques. The result was a lot of grabbing by both men, and Smolik scored points with knees to the body and a few right hooks. He only won a split decision, as one judge apparently gave Abdallah credit for his pressure.
“The Snore of a War” between Smolik and Abdallah is already being called “the worst fight in Glory history” by fans on Instagram.
Stephane Susperregui battled back from a first-round knockdown to win an extra-round decision over Felipe Micheletti in the headline bout of the Glory 69 Superfight Series.
Vlad Tuinov knocked down Artur Saladiak in the second round and won unanimously over Saladiak. Saladiak showed a great heart. He was in serious trouble from punches late in round two, but tried to rally in the third.
Fight of the night was the heavyweight battle between Antonio Plazibat and Tomas Mozny. Plazibat knocked down “The Slovakian Giant” three times but was rocked by the big man also.
