Tyrone Spong had a phenomenal kickboxing career and was once regarded as one of the best in the world pound-for-pound. After leaving the Glory promotion, the Suriname native has focused on professional boxing, and is currently unbeaten in 14 bouts.
Spong will take a big step up in class in his next contest, as the fighter known as “King of the Ring” meets the formidable Oleksandr Usyk in a heavyweight boxing bout to be held on 12 October in Chicago. Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn made the announcement today.
Usyk is the former undisputed cruiserweight champion, and a 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist. He’s unbeaten in sixteen bouts as a pro, and will be making his heavyweight debut after winning the World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Tournament last year.
It’s a huge test for Spong, who hasn’t faced anyone near Usyk’s level in pro boxing. If Spong can somehow upset the Ukrainian, his name figures to be in the conversation for a future title shot.
