Singapore-based promotion ONE Championship announced Italian legend Giorgio Petrosyan and muay thai champion Petchmorrakot will rematch at the ONE: Masters of Destiny event on 12 July in Malaysia.
The two fighters faced one another in a quarterfinal bout of the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing Grand Prix in May. Petchmorrakot defeated Petrosyan by questionable decision. After Petrosyan but Petchmorrakot on the back foot early in the bout, the Thai used the clinch to neutralize the Italian’s offense.
The ONE Championship Committee reviewed the bout, and determined the referee erred because he failed to “adequately control the illegal clinching.” The result was changed to a no-contest.
A rematch was also ordered, and there was speculation Petchmorrakot may withdraw from the tournament because of his team’s disagreement with the One Committee’s decision to overturn his victory and order a rematch.
The Grand Prix quarterfinal rematch will be the main event of the 12 July fight card. The winner advances to meet Jo Nattawut in a tournament semifinal at a later date. France’s Samy Sana faces Dzhabar Askerov of the Russian Federation in the other semifinal.
The One Featherweight Kickboxing Grand Prix is one of the most lucrative tournaments in the sport’s history. One million American dollars in prize money is at stake in the tournament.
