GLORY World Middleweight Champion Alex Pereira will move up in weight to face second-ranked light heavyweight contender Donegi Abena for the interim light heavyweight title at GLORY 68 on 28 September. The organization officially announced the bout today.
Artem Vakhitov is the reigning champion in Glory’s light heavyweight (95 kg) division, but Vakhitov is on the mend after undergoing surgery on his right hand recently in the Netherlands.
With Vakhitov unable to defend due to injury, the organization has arranged an attractive interim title match up, with the Russian presumably to face the winner to unify the title.
Pereira has reigned as the GLORY middleweight king since he won the title by unanimous decision against Simon Marcus in China in October 2017. The Brazilian has racked up four successful title defenses since then, three of them ending inside the distance.
Pereira stopped Yousri Belgaroui twice, then defeated Marcus again by decision in a rematch, before he crushed former champion Jason Wilnis in less than a round in May. Whether Pereira can continue his recent run of KOs against fighters 10 kg heavier remains to be seen.
Suriname’s Abena lost a tight split decision to Vakhitov in a title bout at GLORY 65 in May. The Mike’s Gym fighter is one of the organization’s best young talents, and he’s been given a big opportunity to derail Pereira and win his first GLORY title.
