Beztati: “I’ll only get better”
GLORY lightweight contender Tyjani Beztati was pleased with his effort against champion Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong. The young Dutch-Moroccan fighter surprised many people by going the distance and giving the vastly more experienced Thai a competitive challenge.
“I’m happy with my performance,” Beztati said in a postfight interview with the GLORY YouTube channel. “Like I said before-I had nothing to lose. I’m 20 years old, I got a bright future.”
The taller Beztati, who is six and one half inches taller than Sitthichai, followed a smart gameplan. He kept the fight at distance and moved to his left, circling away from the champion’s powerful left leg. Sitthichai started to score more effectively after the second round, and landed the better blows in the second half of the fight to earn a unanimous five round decision.
“I think the first two rounds were mine,” said Beztati. “I think half of the third round was mine. At the end of the third round, he came back.”
“After that, he did his thing good. Everyone told me it was a pretty close fight. Even the people around the ring.”
Being in the ring with Sitthichai, an accomplished champion with over 150 professional fights can only improve Beztati, who only had 18 bouts as a pro before Saturday. He saw techniques he hadn’t seen before, and had to battle adversity in going five rounds for the first time. Beztati believes he’ll improve from the loss.
“It was a great learning experience for me. I’ll only get better,” he said. I’m happy with my performance.”
“I was glad I was here right now today. All the people-all my friends and family that came from Amsterdam today. I feel blessed and I appreciate everything.”
