News & Notes: Holzken, Semeleer, Lion Fight

Huge Opportunity for Holzken
Former Glory welterweight champion Nieky Holzken is focusing on his boxing career, and he’s been given a huge opportunity. Holzken is set to face Callum Smith of Great Britain Saturday in a super middleweight semifinal of the World Boxing Super Series. Smith was supposed to fight Jurgen Braehmer on Saturday, but Braehmer pulled out of the fight and Holzken was a reserve. It’s Holzkens biggest test as a boxer. Callum Smith is a former British and European champion, and is promoted by one of England’s biggest promoters Eddie Hearn. If Holzken is able to pull off the upset, he gets a chance to fight for the Muhammad Ali Trophy in the tournament final against super middleweight champion George Groves.

“I’ve been waiting for this chance to come,” Holzken said in the press release. Holzken said he is in shape and studied Smith and other fighters in the super middleweight division. It will be a huge upset if Holzken can pull it off.

New Opponent for Semeleer
Endy Semeleer, the 22 year old Dutch fighter who won last year’s Enfusion tournament in Abu Dhabi, has a new opponent for his March 9 return to the ring. Semeleer will face Redouan Laarkoubi on the Enfusion 63 card in the United Arab Emirates. Laarkoubi replaces Aziz Khallah. Laarkoubi defeated Nordin Van Roosmalen by close decision for the Enfusion 75kg title last Saturday, and also defeated Mohamed Jaraya last year.

Lion Fights Promotions Update
Lion Fight 41 will take place on April 7 at the Indigo at the O2 Arena in London, England. The card is a joint MGTP/Lion Fight event. This will be a regular fight card with no tournaments taking place.  Lion Fight has signed the talented Saemapetch Fairtex, a young Thai fighter with over 100 wins. Fairtex will face British standout Charlie Peters on the show.
