Bellator Kickboxing’s next event is scheduled for April 6 in Budapest, Hungary. The Bellator organization released a poster for their MMA/kickboxing event this week, but as of yet no formal announcements of kickboxing matches for the kickboxing portion of the event.
Ironically, one of the MMA fights schedule is between two accomplished female kickboxers in Denise Kielholtz and Lena Ovchynnikova. Kielholtz is the reigning Bellator Kickboxing Women’s Flyweight Champion, and previously competed in Enfusion. Ovchynnikova, who hails from the Ukraine, fought for Dennis Warner’s WCK Muay Thai promotion for a while, and also fought in Kunlun Fight in China.
An interesting name on the poster is Alexey Ignashov, the Belorussian talent best known for fighting in K-1 around the turn of the century. Ignashov, now 40, hasn’t been in the ring since since April 2015, and has only fought three times in the last five years. His record is listed at 85-21(41 KOs), and “The Red Scorpion” has wins over Peter Aerts, Semmy Schilt, the late Mike Bernardo, and a young Badr Hari on his resume. Badr won the rematch and rubber match between the two. Longtime K-1 fans will catch some feelings of nostalgia seeing Ignashov compete again. I saw him fight live in Vegas over a decade ago, and his technique was great even though he was small for a heavyweight.
