Kunlun Fight held its 2018 KLF World Max tournament finals and 100+ kg World Championship tournament Sunday in Shanghai, China. The promotion treated fans in attendance and the millions watching on Chinese television to a night of entertainment that featured exciting fights, top notch production, and also dance performances and pro wrestling.
Davit Kiria is once again a world champion.
The Georgian warrior, a former GLORY Lightweight Champion, won the 2018 KLF 70 kg World Max Championship with a majority decision over Marouan Toutouh of Morocco. Kiria appeared to stun Toutouh with a punch combination late in round three, and it may have been the difference in the scoring. Kiria was the aggressor for most of the bout, and Kunlun Fight judges often favor the fighter coming forward. After a close first round, Toutouh had the advantage in round two, and seemed to be ahead in round three before the late Kiria rally.
An emotional Kira was in tears as he stood on the podium with the championship belts. The 31-year-old has had his shares of ups and downs over the years, but has now won six of his past seven bouts and just won the biggest 70 kg tournament in professional kickboxing.
Roman Kryklia avenged his loss in last year’s heavyweight tournament final to Iraj Azizpour, knocking down the Iranian powerhouse twice en route to a unanimous decision victory.
While Kryklia showed dominance in defeating Enfusion contender Martin Pacas on points and stopping newcomer Rade Opacic to advance to the finals, Azizpour took a more circuitous route. The Iranian hulk lost a decision to Haime Morais of Brazil in the quarterfinals, but advanced when Morais withdrew because of injury. Azizpour ate some clean shots from Asihati in the semifinal, but wore down the Chinese fighter before he finished him off with a big right hand in round three.
In the final, Kryklia landed a big left after Iraj missed a punch to score the first knockdown in round one. More Kryklia punches caused Azizpour to touch a glove to the canvas later in the round. After Kryklia continued to outscore the Iranian in round two, Azizpour became more aggressive in round three. He even landed a couple of spinning backfists, and Kryklia began to tire late in the round, but was clearly ahead.
It’s the second tournament victory in the past few months for Kryklia, who recently defeated ACA champion Tsotne Rogava to win the FEA 2018 World Max GP tournament in Moldova.
Ye Suffers Injury
The sole ladies bout on the card provided some fireworks while it lasted. Annissa Haddoui, a Moroccan-Dutch standout from the Netherlands, and Zhang Ye swapped punches early, and the young Chinese fighter landed a couple of good shots.
Zhang caught a leg and attempted a sweep (legal under KLF rules), but Haddaoui held on and the Mike’s Gym fighter landed on Ye’s right leg. Ye was on the canvas in pain and couldn’t continue-she was stretchered out as a precaution.
Haddaoui, the 2017 KLF Mulan champion, gets another win in Kunlun Fight competition.
