Former soccer player Orlando Smeekes made a successful kickboxing debut with a first-round stoppage win over Tamas Kossenberg at the Rings gala held in Amstelveen, Netherlands.
Smeekes, 37, a former Curacao international and player in the Dutch Eerst Divisie, pressured Kossenberg behind a high guard, and scored knockdowns with both punches and a low kick to gain a referee stoppage.
After the bout, Smeekes stated he was pleased with his performance.
“Wat a great start of this new chapter in my life. Had a lot of hell chapters in the past and they made me the men I am today. Enjoying this one to the fullest, thankful and stronger then ever. This sport suits me 100%,” Smeekes wrote on Instagram.
After a successful debut, the next bout for the former footballer is already scheduled. Smeekes returns to action at the Rings gala in Aalsmeer, Netherlands on 16 November.
