Mykyta Chub made history for himself Friday night.
Not only did the Ukrainian fighter win the FFC Middleweight title, but he is also the first man to defeat previously unbeaten former champion Andi Vrtacic.
Chub captured the title by close split decision in the main event of the FFC 33 card held Friday night at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The event was broadcast nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
It was a close bout. The taller Vrtacic looked to stay at range, and his most effective technique seemed to be the left body kick. Chub, a southpaw, landed some good left hands and also scored with some low kicks and a couple of knees. Not much separated the fighters, and Vrtacic picked up his work rate late in the bout. There were no knockdowns and neither fighter was stunned. Scores were 48-47 twice for Chub, and one 48-47 tally for Vrtacic.
Chub, who fights out of Florida, improves to 19-0-7. Vrtacic is now 10-0-1.
Canada’s McMillan Gets the Win
In the other kickboxing bout on FFC 33, Canadian Chris McMillan edged Teo Mikelic by three round split decision. Scores were 29-28, 29-28, with one dissenter at 28-29 Mikelic.
McMillan’s body kicks were an effective technique for the Canadian, and McMillan was also the fighter coming forward a lot of the time. Mikelic did his best work with punches, and he nailed the taller McMillan with a good right in the third round. McMillan took the shot well.
Like the title fight, it seemed to be a fight that could go either way. McMillan, who is from Calgary and broke his left arm during the bout, improves to 39-0-10. Mikelic is now 18-0-8.
