On the 23rd of February, MMA Bushido is holding an event at the Arena Riga in Riga, Latvia. It’s the first time the organization has promoted MMA bouts in a cage in Latvia.
As part of the fight card, a new KOK series will start. The KOK Fighter Series features top fighters from the organization competing in kickboxing bouts in the MMA cage.
It’s a new trend for the sport. Asian powerhouse promotion ONE Championship and other organizations have been holding kickboxing or Thai-rules bouts in an MMA cage, sometimes with the fighters using the smaller MMA gloves instead of regulation kickboxing gloves.
KOK is beginning to announce fighters and match ups for the February event. Two young fighters from the legendary Mike’s Gym have been announced.
Chico Kwasi, younger brother of 2018 Tatneft Cup champion Fabio Kwasi, faces Aleksejs Marizihins of Latvia.
Mike Sprangh has also been announced for the event, with no mention of an opponent yet. Sprangh made it to the finals of the KOK 85 kg tournament last year, but lost a narrow split decision to Raimonds Aukstikalnis.
A U.K. fighter has also been announced, as Reon Wong returns to KOK. Wong drew with Asaf Aslanov of Azerbaijan at KOK 58 last summer. In November, he defeated Aaron O’Neill at the MTGP 21 event in London.
