Glory Welterweight Champion Cedric Doumbe will defend his world title against arch rival Murthel Groenhart at GLORY 70 on 26 October in Lyon, France. Glory Kickboxing made the official announcement early Thursday.
Doumbe (73-6-1, 43 KOs) will be making his second title defense in his second stint as welterweight champion. He successfully defended in June with a second-round demolition of Alim Nabiyev. The French-Cameroonian has won his last two bouts by second-round stoppage, and will look to add another knockout to the streak against Groenhart.
The two fighters faced one another twice previously. Doumbe won a three-round unanimous decision over Groenhart at Glory 28 in March 2016, and Groenhart (68-24-3, 39 KOs) avenged the defeat and ended Doumbe’s first welterweight title reign with a 5-round split decision at Glory 44 the following year.
After prevailing against Doumbe in the rematch, Groenhart lost the title in stunning fashion via first-round KO to Harut Grigorian at Glory 49 in February 2019. Grigorian successfully defended once before he was dethroned by Doumbe via second-round KO at Glory 64 in March.
In Groenhart’s last bout, “The Predator” lost a close split decision to Nabiyev, also at Glory 64. It was only his second defeat in his last 7 Glory bouts, and the veteran will look to bounce back and reclaim the title on Doumbe’s home soil.
Doumbe and Groenhart have exchanged insults on social media in the past, with Doumbe referring to Groenhart as a “traitor” for his controversial KO win over Grigorian at Glory 42 in June 2017. This is a legitimate grudge match between two of the top 77-kg kickboxers in the world.
“Cedric Doumbe and Murthel Groenhart have one of the strongest rivalries in the entire history of this sport. There’s an intense personal dislike which adds to the professional rivalry and that’s going to boil up in the ring in Lyon on October 30,” Glory CEO Marshall Zelaznik said in the press release.
Also announced for Glory 70 was a featherweight clash between top ten contenders Abdellah Ezbiri (#5) and Zakaria Zouggary (#8).
