Australian kickboxing and Muay Thai legend John Wayne Parr defeated former boxing champion Anthony Mundine in a high-profile boxing match today in Brisbane, Australia.
“Gunslinger” Parr won a ten-round split decision over Mundine, a former WBA Super Middleweight Champion and one of Australia’s top boxers in recent years. Official scores were 96-93, 95-93, and 94-95.
Parr, 43, hadn’t had a professional boxing match since 2003. The Australian competed for the K-1 organization in Japan in 2004-2005 before focusing more on Thai-rules kickboxing. In recent years, Parr has competed in kickboxing for Bellator Kickboxing and Rizin. His kickboxing record is listed at 99-34-1.
Mundine, 44, defeated a lot of top Australian boxers of his era but in recent years has declined. The Parr loss was the fifth in his last seven bouts.
In a story published by Fox Sports Australia, Parr said this was the last bout of his long and distinguished fighting sports career.
“I can’t thank Anthony enough for giving me this opportunity,’’ Parr said. “This is my last fight and I was determined to go out a winner. I need a hip replacement and training was tough but I’m so happy and amazed.”
